Today I went to a lovely yoga and lifestyle retreat organized by the multi-talented Kimberly Wilson. By way of background, I have been going on and off to Kimberly’s Tranquilspace yoga studio since late 2001, when it was about two years old and had moved out of her walkup apartment to a small space attached to a church on 16th street. Now it is in an enormous, light-filled wonderful studio in Dupont Circle, having outgrown its first large light-filled studio in Dupont Circle.
This retreat was actually held offsite and was meant to be a day of yoga, reflection and a catalyst to have your best year yet. I had always wanted to attend one of Kimberly’s retreat because I enjoy her yoga classes and her book Hip Tranquil Chick, but scheduling had been hard for me. This month, it finally seemed doable. She had already done a shorter New Year’s workshop, but to be honest, I wasn’t ready to start the New Year on January 1 so I decided to sign up for the retreat today intead.
One of the things I really enjoyed about the retreat is that it had a really good balance of yoga, reflection time, chatting with others, interesting presentations on creativity and holistic health, and meditation – that said, it was friendly and fun rather than heavy. I was pretty impressed at how information intensive the presentations were, yet how they felt fun. Kate Vickers, a holistic health counselor who spoke about wellness and nutrition, deserves a blog post all of her own – she covered so much in so little time. As you can see from the pictures, we spent the day on our yoga mats.
Now that I am no longer split between two cities, I am excited to go to more workshops such as this — not all the time, but once in a while it’s a nice way to take a break from the everyday. Living in a big city is wonderful, but it’s easy to get drowned by the noise and the work and be on autopilot – so days like today are a good reminder to find some tranquility.
In addition to teaching yoga classes, Kimberly offers various yoga and lifestyle workshops and retreats. Some are in Washington, DC through Tranquil Space, but some maybe closer to you, as I see she is going to hold events in upstate New York, Canada, Southern Virginia in the next few months. If you are not in DC or any of those areas, Kimberly is also leading an Online Creativity Circle starting January 26. This is a private podcast for registrants to listen to at their leisure and work through 3 creativity books over eight weeks.
Kimberly also has an eco-luxe fashion line housed at a showroom near Dupont Circle and she has started having creativity-related events there as well. You may remember my raving about this top from her line a few months ago. Pictures by Kimberly Wilson.
