It’s no secret that I love love love ballet flats. But, let’s face it, in winter, they do not provide a whole lot of protection between your feet and the cold ground (and it’s been way too cold here in Washington) – so I spent most of the last couple of winters looking for a “winterized ballet flat.”
I realize that sounds like an insane concept – but I had a clear vision of it, as I explained to my huband one day: “I want a ballet flat with a slightly thicker, more insulated sole, no maryjane strap, and no hint of an oxford or walking shoe.” Then I told him about my theory that I can’t be the only one who is looking for that, and eventually someone will manufacture that idea.
And, sure enough, I eventually found something that came pretty close.
To me, it’s the perfect shoe to wear under black yoga pants or jeans on weekends – it’s warm and has tread, but has the same easy slip-on feel as a ballet flat. It sizes a bit big – I usually wear a 9 to 9.5 and I had to buy an 8.5 in these. It’s not exactly what I was looking for – ie, I could do without the stitching, but it was close enough that I bought them.
Bonus point: while these are definitely weekend shoes for me (i.e. they are way too casual to wear to work), they do make great commuting shoes for me. Since I almost exclusively wear pantsuits, these shoes just kind of peek out and you cant really tell how casual they are. Plus they are almost as comfortable as sneakers!
