Matchbox is one of my favorite restaurants in Washington – I usually go to the location at Gallery Place, but there is also one on Capitol Hill. The sliders are delicious and easily a must-get appetizers, but I especially love their brick-oven pizza, which is wonderfully thin-crusted. Be sure to get your pizza with their fresh mozarella as it really does make the pizza amazing.
One thing about Matchbox is that it is *insanely* crowded all the time. I have found that going at off-times (like a 3pm lunch on a Saturday) greatly increases the odds of getting a table with a very short wait, but even that is not guaranteed. Still, if you are willing to wait a bit, the food is delicious.

oh it does look good!!!!
I totally went there on my last trip to D.C.! I think i had the crab cake sandwich, but my friend and i DEF. shared the sliders. Delish!!
P.S. On my next trip, we must get together and feast And get those waffles!!
Sounds like a great restaurant to visit and would love a slice of that pizza.
I totally agree! I purposely figure out off times like exactly 5:00 before everybody gets off work to avoid the wait. Another option is getting your pizza to go and taking it over to Rocket Bar to watch a game since they don’t serve food and allow you to bring yours in.
Hey, how fun that I found your blog through My Bella Vita– We are moving to DC this summer from Naples. I can’t wait to get to eating. I told my husband I want to live between an Indian and Thai restaurant with a bagel shop across the way. I love Italian food, but I’m ready to go global đŸ˜‰
Oooh, I’ve never been there – it looks really good! *adds to list of places I must go to when I visit DC*
Noodlegirl – SO good.
Carolyn – absolutely!
Ivy – it’s most excellent.
City Girl DC – will definitely remember the tip about Rocket Bar.
South of Rome – if you live in Adams Morgan you could totally have that exact setup!
The Curator – Matchbox is totally worth a visit though you seem to have better pizza places in Baltimore in general, whereas Matchbox is one of the very few places in DC I can get good pizza.
Until last year I lived in DC and LOVED this place . . . you are right, though – soooo crowded! but worth the wait.
as for pizza, though, have you tried Vace’s in Cleveland Park? It is actually not a restaurant but more of a grocery store that sells pizza, either by the slice or whole pies. anyway, i think it is the best in DC!
