Today we had several errands to run and we were going to go to Pete’s Apizza for lunch, but got delayed and hungry and cranky (ok, I got cranky) just as we were right near a restaurant with this:
Yes, we were by the newly opened P.F. Chang’s in Friendship Heights (a neighborhood on the Washington, DC and Maryland border).
I was a little confused why the veggie options were so scant on the gluten-free menu. The few items on the top right are the only veggie options, and you can see how extensive the rest of the menu is:
But then I read this:
And it made sense. The gluten-free sauces are not veggie-based at all. I do love that brown rice is available here. I got the Budha’s Delight, steamed with no sauce:
Along with a half-side-plate of sugar snap peas:
Honestly, the best parts were the tofu and the sugar snap peas. Next time I am just getting a full side of sugar snap peas and a bowl of brown rice, and maybe some of the tofu. That said, it was nice to be able to eat out at an Asian restaurant that had a gluten-free menu. If you eat meat or shellfish, there’s really plenty of options there.
Along with lunch at P.F. Chang’s, we also hit all these stores:
- Whole Foods (I was hoping their nut butter selection would larger than the P Street Whole Foods, but no luck – looks like I am going to have to order a raw almond butter, as my only option in local stores is Maranatha raw almond butter)
- Sephora (concealer!)
- Bloomingdales (foundation!)
- Borders (to sit at the cafe and read magazines)
- Best Buy (for husband)
- Container Store (for both of us)
You can tell we were pretty busy. We rarely eat out two meals in a day, but seeing as this is a holiday weekend, we decided to go the staycation route and get dinner out. Of course we had to have Pete’s Apizza for dinner since we were supposed to have it for lunch and I still had a pizza craving. I love their gluten-free crust. It is made on-site and does not have eggs in it. Look how lovely my pizza turned out:
I got tomato sauce, roasted peppers, sauteed spinach and broccoli rabe, roasted garlic, and sauteed mushrooms.
After coming home, I proceeded to make a mess of the kitchen:
To finish up with this:
Yes, figs and two mini sunbutter cups. This was my first time making sunbutter cups and I totally made it up as I went along – for once I did not feel like finding a recipe first. I am off to enjoy them along with the figs. If they are as delicious as they look I will share the recipe soon. Have a good night!

Looks like a lovely day for a shopstaycation! Enjoy the rest of the weekend!
I love reading about your adventures in being gluten free. Shopstaycation is such a wonderful way to describe a shopping + eating out day. I did the same yesterday and discovered a wonderful gluten free restaurant.
