I am on my way back to Washington, DC after spending the weekend in Philadelphia at the Healthy Living Summit. It was a very nice weekend away, meeting bloggers whose blogs I had been reading for a long time as well as discovering new blogs.
One of the things I had been looking forward to was dinner with a few bloggers, organized by Sarah of the SHU Box, at Kanella, including JT, Heather and Allie as well as two blog readers and future bloggers:
Back to Kanella, a Greek Cypriot kitchen – there is a heavy focus on fresh local vegetables at this restaurant, as well as lamb and goat cheese. I had called ahead and been assured they could serve up a gluten-free vegan option for me, and I was very pleased with my dinner: hummus with arugula and some sliced raw vegetables for my appetizer:
Followed by a gigante white bean stew with mushrooms, leeks, tomatoes, cauliflower, herbs:
It was warm, fragrant and filling. The only thing I wish is that I had asked for a side of the vegan tahini sauce that the restaurant serves with the bread. I did not partake in the sauce or the bread as the bread at Kanella is wheat-based, but I bet the lemon tahini sauce would have been a nice added counterpoint to the white bean stew. I should add that the pictures do not do the food justice and that Kanella actually has a no picture recipe, which was only mentioned at the end of the meal. I hope they do not mind the review, as I really enjoyed my dinner.
